Using FileMaker Go on Mobile Devices to Facilitate Teacher Observations

Kent Sweigart

Cocalico School District administrators had been exploring ways to complete teacher walk-through observations using a mobile application. Expectations included a simple interface with the ability to share observations with staff electronically and to review past observations. FileMaker Go allows devices to connect to a shared FileMaker database. See more here.

The development of the form emerged through discussions with building principals. The FileMaker database ties to Active Directory. Upon opening the database, the administrator can choose from a list of teacher names. Administrators then indicate the period they observed the teacher. The date auto-fills but may be altered. The administrator completes the form, selecting “observed” or “not observed” for criteria in two areas, classroom environment and instructional delivery. There is a comment area for both classroom environment and instructional delivery where the administrator can enter additional remarks.

When complete, the administrator emails a PDF of the observation to the teacher via a button displayed on the form. Administrators may also search the database by teacher name to view previous observations, which are available for that teacher. Leadership at Cocalico, knowing that new teacher observation requirements are on the horizon, were hoping that this application might meet those requirements and use less financial resources.
