The Anatomy of a Cyber Threat: Protecting Your School Population Amidst Mounting Concerns

In recent months, the U.S. Department of Education has been warning teachers, students, and parents of cyber threats targeting school districts and educational institutions nationwide. Various states have been plagued by extortion attempts from hackers threatening the release of stolen private records. Hackers target institutions with weak data security or well-known vulnerabilities that enable access to sensitive data. Because of their network architectures, schools are particularly vulnerable, and without the proper tools and resources in place, they cannot protect the personal information of their students, including social security numbers, birthdates, and even medical and financial information. In this session, real-world examples will be used to cover: the anatomy of a threat – tracing an attack and identifying key inflection points to deter the threat, protecting student personal information – how to secure sensitive information in the modern network, top security issues for educators, and the future of network security for digital learning.
